OTT Usability Testing
Framework
During my internship at Norigin Media (January–May 2022), I developed a usability testing framework for OTT media services as part of my bachelor’s thesis. The goal was to create a scalable methodology that could be used beyond the project period. Easy to understand, adapt and apply, while maintaining a high standard and aligning with Norigin Media’s design profile. The framework included concepts, best practices, templates and real test examples, enabling the company to offer usability testing as a service to current and future clients. To validate it, we conducted a full usability test on a client application, then presented the framework and findings to RiksTV.

Background
Norigin Media delivers customized OTT solutions for media providers like RiksTV, TV2 and Canal Digital. While the company had a strong in-house design process, they wanted to expand their services to include usability testing particularly to validate design decisions early and improve product-market fit. My role was to explore and define how this could be done effectively, using real user insights from Smart TV apps.
Process
Approach
The four phases of usability testing
The framework was structured around a four-phase process: data gathering, pre-test, testing, and post-test. We began by conducting a user survey targeting RiksTV customers to gather data on pain points in their Smart TV experience. The findings helped us identify key usability issues we wanted to explore further. Based on this, we created a detailed test plan and designed realistic task scenarios.
After recruiting participants, we ran moderated, task-based usability tests and documented insights throughout each session. To assess the overall user experience, all participants completed the System Usability Scale (SUS) at the end of testing. The results were analyzed and presented to both Norigin Media and their client RiksTV, validating the framework as a scalable and effective testing method for future OTT applications.
